RIC #35 and Mainstream Cards vs Artsy Cards

using the walkway as the jumping off point...

The stamps are from Penny Black. I was feeling like my last few RIC cards were a little on the artsy side and I wanted to show some range and come back to mainstream card making. Do you ever do that? Create cards and then all the sudden you think, will NORMAL people like this? If this card was in a store for sale, would people buy them? Sometimes I blur the lines between cards that are art and cards that are market worthy. Kind of reminds me of one of my favorite shows Project Runway. There are some designers that put on a great show, but no one would BUY their fashions. I know if Elena Roussakis had a card for sale, I would buy her stuff in a heartbeat! And all the design team ladies always make great sell-able cards too...

  1. I kinda prefer the "artsy" cards you did, Wida lol this one is still pretty and a fun play of colors and patterns. But it does not make me "wow"... I was thinking you have gone to a new level of card making ;)

  3. I told you I'd visit you! Wida....I think this is a beautiful card and would definitely buy it. I'm torn because your "other" style is fun and trendy but on the other hand, this card speaks to ME. I think that's what matters....not every card you make will appeal to everyone. Just make what makes YOU happy and we'll see the true Wida! xx

  4. I'm happy to see either of your styles, but your recent creations definitely have the edge. Love the wood background paper on this one.

  6. art is so subjective! make what makes you happy, and you will have people that respond to it :) I love that the jumping off point to your card was the walkway - amazing!

  8. Hahaha, you know I love your analytics! You always write what everyone is thinking : ) It's hard. I hear where you're coming from. But whenever I make a card for someone else's tastes I'm always left a little disappointed. I love your edgy, don't change a thing! Fun to see how you were inspired with this photo.

  11. This is so pretty, Wida! I love it!
I do think that about my cards sometimes.... It might be on trend, but would people who don't follow card making like it?
Oh well, I figure as long as I like it and the recipient likes it, then it's all good. ;)

  12. I don't know what you're thinking but I would definitely buy your cards :D Love how you used the walkway!

  13. Love how you used the runway as your starting point. You are so creative, Wida.
    Your cards are definitely sell-able!

  14. Wida, I would buy your recent RIC cards anytime! They are completely sale-able :)
As for this one, it is pretty and of different style. For me, non-sale-able cards would be those that have over-sized/delicate elements or cards that take too long to make (like some of my cards for example :/ ). When I look at you cards, I see most of them are unique, awesome and not too time-consuming, so keep it up :)

  15. Funny how we can convince ourselves that what we do (or make) doesn't appeal to people. Fact is ALL of your cards are beautiful and different ones will appeal to different people at different times. Don't get down on yourself and keep up the beautiful work!

  16. This is just beautiful, Wida! I LOVE Project Runway, too, and totally agree. But wrt your cards, seriously? They would ALL sell in a heartbeat!!

  25. This is a lovely card Wida! On art/subjective vs mainstream - I always prefer things that are unique and different. I think your other style is more of a 'Wida' style and that's what I love about it! For 'mainstream'... ugh, why make things that are ten a penny? <-- that's a generalistic comment, not directed at you, before you start analysing!

Art is art. Just make what makes you happy. That's my motto. If other people like it too, well, that's just a bonus. :-)

  26. All that stamping on the pattern paper really got my attention - the flower is a beautiful contrast to the wood background. I hear you about the whole "what will people like" thing. Seems like the ones I'm not crazy about get a better response and then I start over thinking it. Everything you do is wonderful - just let it flow girl! No looking back!
